Ten years ago, a small team at the CSN set out to do something bold, tell the real stories of our students, in their own words. No scripts, no stage lights, just raw honesty about what it takes to reach a dream when life keeps throwing curveballs.
That idea became No Greater Odds, a powerful documentary that struck a chord far beyond campus. Now, a decade later, it’s coming full circle with a special 10th anniversary screening on Nov. 17 at the 2025 Complete College America Convening (NEXT) in Baltimore. CSN’s Dr. James McCoy and Charlene S. Gibson, who co-created and produced the film, will host the screening and share what’s changed — and what hasn’t — since the film first hit the screen.
The film follows five unforgettable CSN students who proved that success isn’t about luck, it’s about persistence.
Barbara Ayarza, a single mother of six, walked into orientation knowing she couldn’t afford to stay, but that one day on campus changed everything.
Carlos Holguin discovered his true calling in music just before graduation, learning that passion doesn’t always follow a straight line.
Jaklin Guyumjyan, who immigrated from Armenia the day before 9/11, found strength and purpose while navigating two worlds at once.
Monique Makhlouf, who worked multiple jobs to support her injured mother, discovered that sometimes the right conversation at the right time can alter your path.
Tyrone Foster, who returned to college years after surviving trauma and battling mental illness, found healing through education and advocacy.
No Greater Odds came to life thanks to a small but mighty crew who believed in the power of storytelling:
Patrick Wirtz, Director, whose creative eye turned everyday moments into something cinematic.
John C. Aliano, Producer and Cinematographer, longtime CSN Film Program Director, and Emmy Award-winning faculty member who helped train the next generation of storytellers.
Dr. James McCoy, Executive Producer, whose vision connected the film’s message to the broader mission of community colleges nationwide.
Charlene S. Gibson, Associate Producer, who brought her trademark energy, heart, and #TeamGibson magic to every frame.
To everyone who shared their story, rolled tape, adjusted lights, or believed this little film from our Las Vegas classrooms could make a difference — thank you. What started as a campus project has become a national conversation about access, hope, and second chances.
Here’s to ten years of No Greater Odds, and to every student who proves, day after day, that the odds don’t stand a chance.
