Community Celebrates Opening of New Education & Training Center
The Historic Westside showed up in full force Saturday as the College of Southern Nevada, in partnership with the City of Las Vegas, opened the doors to the new Westside Education and Training Center.
Under clear skies and perfect spring temperatures, a steady breeze carried the sound of music, conversation and celebration across the campus. Families gathered, kids bounced between activities, and neighbors greeted one another like a long-awaited reunion.
The Gibson Middle School drum line kicked off the morning with an energetic performance, followed by remarks from Stavan Corbett, Executive Director of the Division of Workforce and Economic Development. CSN President Dr. Stacy Klippenstein took the stage to recognize the many leaders who helped bring the vision to life, including Cedric Creer, Frank Woodbeck and Dr. Weekly, while also thanking former CSN President Dr. Federico Zaragoza, who was in attendance.
“I am riding on your shoulders, so thank you,” Klippenstein said.
Throughout the day, the space felt less like a formal opening and more like a community block party. Food trucks served up funnel cakes and ice cream, a bouncy house kept kids busy, and radio remotes from 88.1 and Fiesta Radio added to the energy. Inside, visitors toured classrooms and connected with program staff while learning about training opportunities now available.
Outside, one moment captured exactly what the center is about. Abraham, an instructor in the short-term training program, stood beside a boom lift with his daughter Aurora. Both wearing hard hats, he walked her through the controls, guiding her as she carefully lifted the machine off the ground. It was hands-on, practical, and rooted in real opportunity.
Students were eager to share what the center already means to them.
Alejandra Lopez, a mother of two enrolled in ESL courses, said the flexibility has made all the difference. “I have a lot of options to take my classes online or in person,” she said. “And it’s affordable, which really matters for my family.”
Eric B., also in the ESL program, said the experience has changed his confidence and his path forward. “This English course gives me more confidence,” he said. “The teachers are amazing.” Eric, who also works as a student ambassador and is pursuing his GED, said the skills he’s gained have already helped him grow in his current job.
Leaders including Congressman Steven Horsford and Las Vegas Councilwoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong emphasized the long-term impact of the center. Summers-Armstrong described it as a “cradle to career” campus, designed to support residents at every stage of life.
WETC offers short-term training programs that lead to industry-recognized credentials, along with direct connections to employers. Wraparound services are also available to support students and families beyond the classroom.
