Coach Nick Garritano

As a community college, we should be used to this — watching successful alumni move on to universities, where they’ll get the opportunity to do even bigger and better things. That kind of empowerment is written right into our Mission Statement.

‌But this one is more bittersweet than most.

Longtime Baseball Coach Nick Garritano is leaving CSN for UNLV. The university made the announcement today.

“It’s just a little bit surreal,” Coach Nick said from his office on the CSN Henderson Campus, “but it’s a really cool thing. This place is near and dear to my heart. I mean, my kids grew up in this office, so there’s mixed emotions. But I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a great opportunity.”

You all know Garritano. He’s a legend.

Nine hundred forty eight wins as a baseball coach — 632 of them in his 16 years at CSN. Coach of the year, multiple championships, nationally ranked teams, dozens of Academic All Americans, 22 players drafted into the majors. It goes on and on.

Garritano, his wife and his son are all UNLV grads — and he’s a UNLV hall of fame football player, too — so it’ll be a good fit for him. He said he’s always had that scarlet and grey running through his veins, anyway.

UNLV is lucky to have him.

We’ll launch a search for a new coach immediately.

Please join me in thanking Nick, and wishing him the best. He deserves it.
