CSN to Celebrate Black History Month Spring 26 Lineup

CSN will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a series of events honoring Black voices, history, creativity, and community. Organized in collaboration with Sankofa, Office of Civic and Cultural Engagement, AACH, and other campus partners, the lineup includes performances, conversations, art, writing, and opportunities for students to engage across all three campuses and online.

Below is the full schedule of events in chronological order.

Monday, Feb. 9

Black History Month Kickoff Celebration
3–4:30 p.m.
Charleston Campus, Student Union

Black History Month begins with a kickoff celebration featuring cultural performances, music, and food as CSN comes together to recognize the contributions and achievements of the African American community.


Tuesday, Feb. 10

Sounds for the Soul: Karaoke and Open Mic
12–3 p.m.
Charleston Campus, Student Union

Students are invited to take the mic or cheer on their peers during this open mic and karaoke event honoring Black voices of the past, present, and future.


Wednesday, Feb. 11

Sankofa Black Writer Series: Dr. Monica Riley
Noon
Charleston Campus, The Den (Student Union)

The Sankofa Black Writer Series opens with Dr. Monica Riley, author of Joy Is Just Over Yonder: Passionate Stories of Joy Realized. Students will have the opportunity to meet the author and engage in conversation about writing, storytelling, and joy.

Through the Ages of Rap, Hip-Hop and R&B
1 p.m.
North Las Vegas Campus, Student Union

Presented in collaboration with the Black Student Union, this event celebrates Black History Month through music, culture, and community, highlighting the impact and legacy of Black artists across generations.

Sankofa Black Writer Series: The F.E.W. Collective
Noon
North Las Vegas Campus, The Den (Student Union)

Local authors from The F.E.W. Collective, creators of Bars and Beats, will meet with students to discuss their work and the power of Black voices in literature.


Wednesday, Feb. 19

Celebrating Black History Month
11 a.m.–1 p.m.
North Las Vegas Campus Library, Main Building E, second floor

This event invites students to celebrate Black history through art, expression, and community while recognizing notable and contemporary Black figures and history makers.


Tuesday, Feb. 24

Canvas and Culture
Noon–2 p.m.
Henderson Campus, Student Union

Canvas and Culture combines a mini art gallery, inspiring music by Black artists, and a hands-on painting experience celebrating Black and African-diaspora creativity.


Wednesday, Feb. 25

Sankofa Black Writer Series: CSN Student Writers Panel
Noon
Charleston Campus, The Den (Student Union)

The final event in the Sankofa Black Writer Series features a panel of published CSN student writers sharing their work and experiences.

Conversations With Psychology
2 p.m.
Virtual

This virtual conversation focuses on mental health and wellness in the African American community. Attendees can  attend the TEAMS virtual session.

Poetic Jam
4–6 p.m.
North Las Vegas Campus, June Whitley Lounge

CSN’s Poetic Jam invites performers and poets to share their voices, stories, and skills in a supportive and creative space. Performer registration closes Dec. 20.

Sankofa Black History Month Essay Contest

Students enrolled in a course taught by a Sankofa English professor during the Spring 2026 semester are invited to participate in the Sankofa Black History Month Essay Contest.

Essay topic: Against All Odds: Redefining a Movement

Prizes include CSN Bookstore vouchers for first-, second-, and third-place submissions. Questions can be directed to Sankofa@csn.edu.
