Important CSN Career Fair Update
Dear CSN Community,
CSN is proud of the services we provide that complement our mission: empowering our students and communities to achieve, succeed, and prosper. We achieve those ends by teaching, training, engaging, and providing opportunities for our students to continue their education, join the workforce, or both.
Later this month, for example, we’re holding another one of our career fairs. Our faculty and staff have organized over 50 employer partners to come to our campuses to help students connect with potential jobs. And for the first time, we are hosting a career fair at our Henderson campus! We have great relationships with many of these employers, who return year after year to our career fairs because they know the value of a well-trained college student. Additionally for the first time, we collaborated with UNLV and NSU to all hold career fairs during the same two-week window to maximize opportunities for NSHE students and to make it easier for employers to coordinate.
This year, as in years past, U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be one of the employers joining us. To provide some clarity and dispel misconceptions, CBP and ICE are not the same agency, although both do fall under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Despite that distinction, the political climate has caused some misunderstandings to circulate. We’ve had students, faculty and staff express their concerns to us and have asked us to alter our career fair. We considered that request, but we will be going forward as scheduled. The agency in question is a longstanding partner in our career fairs and is scheduled to be at others in Southern Nevada. In addition, we strictly follow the NSHE Board of Regents Handbook’s guidance on Freedom of Expression.
To help answer questions, clarify the intent of the career fairs, and address the specific partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Dr. Jonathan Wright, Director of Career Services, has organized two information sessions, one for faculty and staff from 8-8:45 a.m. on February 18, and one for students from 3-3:45 p.m. on February 19. He’ll be joined by Human Resources, General Counsel, and the Office of Civic and Cultural Engagement to provide context and guidance. I hope you can join them to learn more and engage in our goal for civil discourse. And, as always, we’ll keep our focus on our mission.
Any questions may be directed to Dr. Jonathan Wright.
Thank you.
