PTK’s ‘Honors-in-Action’ Project Takes Top Award
Earlier this month, student officers from CSN’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society won a first place award in the Nevada/California region for their Honors in Action project, which they first embarked on last fall.
PTK chapters conduct undergraduate research through the HIA program, which combines honors study topic exploration, problem solving, and action-oriented service to address real-world challenges. CSN’s chapter’s project, “The Power of Stories,” involved completing research, and developing an action to address their research question, Why is Storytelling important in Healthcare? Students interviewed senior citizens at an assisted living facility about their healthcare experiences, resilience, and life stories. The team then shared their findings with younger students at a local elementary school, discussing empathy, listening, and caring for others. The first-hand stories were retold to 5th-grade students, who were a part of their elementary school’s own honor society called Junior Lighthouse. Those students were encouraged to respond through written letters and messages of kindness, reinforcing the importance of stories across generations.
In addition to the first-place award, CSN’s chapter was also awarded a 5-star chapter certificate (the highest level) and four certificates of completion of regional projects.
Congratulations!
